TORONTO, ON – The two-time defending Canadian Rugby Champions Ontario Blues have released their 2013 roster ahead of next week’s season opener against the Atlantic Rock.
Seventeen different Ontario clubs from London to Ottawa are represented on the team, with six new faces cracking the 30-man senior roster.
As well, the Blues will look to U20 standouts Jake Webster, Lucas Hammond, and Conor McCann to bolster the back line.
The Blues will be missing five starters for the opener, as Ray Barkwill, Tom Dolezel, Doug Wooldridge, John Moonlight, and Liam Underwood will all be with Canada for their World Cup qualifying match in Charleston, South Carolina. However, the Blues are welcoming the return of Mike Scholz, Haddon Murray, Steve Piatek, and the aforementioned McCann, all of whom missed the 2012 season. Dave Neill, an original member of the Blues, is also returning to the squad.
“We have a big challenge next week,” said Blues head coach Chris Silverthorn. “With many guys away, it will make a tough Rock side even tougher to play against. There are no easy games in the CRC, but we have got some guys returning and some others stepping up to fill the gaps, so we will take our best shot.”
The six first-time Blues on the 2013 CRC roster are Tim and Pat Richardson and Jesse Lofthouse of the Markham Irish, Mike Sheppard of Stoney Creek, Matt Alexander of Oshawa, and Chris Seyler of the Ottawa Irish.
“We had 59 very strong candidates for the team, and this was by far the most complex selection process we have ever gone through,” said Blues manager Mark Winokur. “But it’s that strong competition that keeps the guys pushing each other, which makes for a healthy team atmosphere.”
The Blues will kick off their 2013 CRC campaign against the Atlantic Rock on August 17th in Burlington, ON.
