In just the second year of the newly formed Canadian Rugby Championship (National Senior men’s rugby championship) Rugby Canada are thrilled to announce that this event has been selected to anchor the broadcast of Sports Day in Canada on CBC, presented by ParticipACTION and True Sport.

The CRC (Canadian Rugby Championship) is a round robin competition featuring four teams representing regions across the country.  The Rock are made up of athletes representing the Atlantic provinces and Quebec; the Prairie Wolf Pack are selected from the best players in Manitoba, Alberta and Saskatchewan, while the BC Bears and Ontario Blues are selected from the best players within those two respective provinces.

The CRC has been identified as the final step in the player development pathway for possible selection to Canada’s National Senior Men’s Team.  Following the successful completion of the CRC season, players will be identified and selected to compete for a Canada Selects team that will travel to Argentina and compete in the IRB (International Rugby Board) America’s Rugby Championship.

Rugby Canada Commercial Director, Nick Taylor said, “When we were first approached by agents for the project, we had been asked to help identify certain grassroots events that may be considered for profiling in the lead up to the big day on September 18th.  In several follow up conversations, we identified that the CRC finals day being held on the very same day would be an ideal sport to consider as a key component of CBC’s live broadcast content.”

Taylor went on to say, “the steering committee working on behalf of ParticipACTION, True Sport and CBC Sports faced the dubious task of selecting key events as the anchor content for the broadcast. The decision speaks volumes about the position rugby has taken up in the Canadian sport framework in the last year or so.”

Sports Day in Canada, on September 18, 2010, is a national celebration of sport, from grassroots to high-performance levels, in communities across Canada.  Sports Day in Canada caps off a week of thousands of local sporting events and activities, open houses and try-it days showcasing sport at all levels, and includes a special television broadcast on CBC Sports.

Sports Day in Canada is presented by CBC Sports, ParticipACTION and True Sport and is guided by a committee of national sporting organizations and their networks of coaches, athletes and enthusiasts across the country.  It's an opportunity for all Canadians to celebrate the power of sport to build community, fortify our national spirit and facilitate healthy, active living.

As part of the Sports Day activities leading to the final broadcast day, September 17th has been identified as “National Jersey Day” – and Rugby Canada encourages all members of the community to wear their favourite rugby jersey – wherever you may be on that day.
