The 2017 Senior Men’s Canadian Rugby Championship schedule has been announced that will see each team play a total of four games.
After opening pool-stage matches in Truro, NS and Vancouver, BC, all four teams — Atlantic Rock, BC Bears, Ontario Blues and the Prairie Wolf Pack — will descend upon Calgary, AB, for their final two pool-stage matches before final standings will be determined in a third place and championship match.
“It will be great to return to Calgary again for the CRC after their tremendous hospitality during the 2015 edition of the tournament and it’ll be exciting to see what’s in store in 2017, Dixon said. “Rugby World Cup 2019 is fast approaching and the CRC is the opportunity for domestic players seeking to impress selectors, secure a place in the Rugby Canada centralized training program and support their preparation for 2019.”
The season will open on July 14 when the Bears host the Wolf Pack in Vancouver before the Rock host the Blues on July 22 in Truro.
The four teams will head to Calgary as the Rock face the Bears and the Wolf Pack battle the Blues on August 12 before the Blues will meet the Bears on August 15 while the Wolf Pack tackle the Rock.
Based on the standings from the first three games, a third place game and championship match will take place on August 19.
“The CRC is a critical pathway to the senior men’s program,” said Canada’s senior men’s head coach Mark Anscombe. “As we have seen with the Americas Rugby Championship, CRC players are being given the opportunity to play test rugby and show that they can compete on the international stage and putting themselves in contention for our 2019 Rugby World Cup cycle.”
The Ontario Blues are the defending CRC champions and own the record for the most MacTier Cup victories with five national titles. The Rock, Bears and Wolf Pack have each won the title once.
“It’s great to see the competition in its eighth year still putting the best domestic players head to head in what has been described by the players as the most intense physical domestic competition to this point in Canadian Rugby history,” said Gord Sneddon, CRC Tournament Commissioner.
Broadcast details, as well as kickoff times, for all matches will be confirmed in the coming months.
