   CRC Senior Men:
THE ROCK HOLD OFF THE WOLF PACK
- Submitted by
The sunny skies and light breeze out of the south at the Calgary Rugby Park set the stage for a hotly contested match between the Atlantic Rock and the Prairie Wolf Pack.

The game was always going to be an even one, with both sides fielding strong teams.  The national 7’s and 15’s programs were well represented and the level of play was highly competitive.

The Rock scored first (and early) to set the tone as they played with the wind in the first half.  Their experienced side rode the solid boots of Pat Parfrey and Ciaran Hearn, who both managed to put the Wolf Pack back three under pressure.

After conceding 12 points to the visitors, the Pack got on the board with a multi-phase attack which saw their season MVP Clay Panga put Canadian U20 hooker Casey Reed away on the inside for a much needed score.  The end of the first half had the Rock holding a small margin, but the Pack were hopeful going with the wind for the 2nd stanza.

Unfortunately the Rock proved wily and skillful, as they scored on their first possession of the 2nd half after counter attacking beautifully from a Wolf Pack box kick.  Ciaran Hearn again was the catalyst as he broke a number of tackles before off-loading for the score.

The Pack continued to strike back each time the Rock got ahead and were well within striking distance as the second half went on.  Try’s from player of the game Jeff Hassler (2) and captain Hubert Buydens would put the pack with 3 points, but the firm Atlantic defence held up throughout.   Final score 29-26 to the deserved winners.

The 2 bonus points for the losing Wolf Pack ended the season on a bit of a low.  Despite that, there is still a chance to win the CRC with 16 points.  The Prairies boys will be cheering for the Rock now in St. John’s next weekend (for the first time ever!!).

As an improvement on last season, the team is pleased and are looking forward to building upon that success and improving for 2013.

The team would like to make a special thanks to the generous support of all our sponsors, fans and management who made this season possible and without whom we would not be able to put the team on the pitch.
